GERMANES

In this macabre drama, director Agustí Villaronga shows us
Catalonia during the early post-war years. The initial and gripping first seen of
the movie shows us the young protagonist, Andreu, as he discovered the bodies
of a young friend and his friend’s father after being thrown off the side of a cliff.
Andreu’s family pertains to the republicans who lost the war and local
officials immediately point to Andreu's father as the guilty party. To combat
these accusations, Andreu begins his own investigations into who the possible
killer could be. Soon, the lies and secrets of the adult world that surrounds
him begin to crumble and he discovers some of the horrors committed by his
father during the war. After the uncovering of a particularly disdainful action
committed by his father, Andreu cannot reconcile his feelings for his parents’ (apparent) dishonesty and chooses to abandon his life with his family for that of their
enemies. Black Bread was Spain’s nomination for Best Foreign Language Film to
this year’s Academy Awards. It is truly a beautiful movie that shows the
horrors of the immediate postwar, francoist era from the perspective of a child
in a chilling fashion.
conviuen a Barcelona. Xavier is a student of economics from Paris that, albeit
being the ripe age of 27, lives with his mother. In order to obtain a job in
Paris, he agrees to spend time in Spain as part of an exchange program in order to
learn Spanish. He leaves his beautiful girlfriend (yay, Audrey Tautou!)
promising to remain faithful and heads to Barcelona. In the Barcelona airport,
Xavier’s adventures begin. He befriends a French couple (a Dr. and his wife) that
ends up giving him a temporary place to stay (and a little more), when his
original housing plans fall through. This movie does a great job illustrating
the melting pot that defines Barcelona. He soon interviews and finds an
apartment full of international students: an Italian guy, an English girl, a
boy from Denmark, a young girl from Belgium, a German and a spaniard from
Tarragona. The movie follows the trials, tribulations, crazy, fun lifestyle of
these young people as they complete their courses and find their life’s
adventure. Eventually Xavier returns to Paris and starts his first day at his
new job. Within minutes, he runs from the office screaming in search something
different. His experiences in Barcelona have inspired him to become a writer to
represent all his friends from the madhouse where he lived in Spain.
