Movie review - "Tres dies amb la família"

Tres dies amb la família (2009) és un estudi d'una família català on el director, Mar Coll, utilitza una cinematorafia magnífica per mostrar la dinàmica de la família Vich i Carbó. This movie follows the young protagonist, Léa, to Girona to accompany her family in mourning the loss of her paternal grandfather. Léa returns from abroad and a life with her French boyfriend to be reunited with her family after a long absence. Through this gathering, the viewer learns about the different generation of this conservative, middle-class Catalan family. The mentioned “three days” from the title references the days of the wake, mass and burial of a grandfather who has left behind three sons and a daughter. Léa’s aunts and uncles do not visit one another often and their differences in opinions about quotidian problems soon become an issue in itself. Léa’s generation of the family, while in similar ages, have also changed throughout the years and have different opinions about their lives and family too. For example, Léa informs them that she plan on opening a bar with her boyfriend—and idea that her cousins’ mock—but Léa refuses to conform to the ideals of her family and insists on living her dream. Even though she and her boyfriend eventually breakup towards the end of the film, the audience sees Léa return to her life abroad and hold on to her desire to break the mold imposed by her family history.
